The Fitzsimmons-John Arena, with a 2, 650 seat capacity became the new home of over 6 decades of Greyhound basketball excellence in 1998. This excellence has garnered four national championships, 26 Region XVI titles, and 42 NJCAA All-Americans for the men, and one national championship, 13 Region XVI championships and 21 NJCAA All-Americans for the women’s program.
The arena is named for the two most famous coaching eras in Greyhound basketball. Coaches Maurice John and Cotton Fitzsimmons’ careers at Moberly are legendary. The instant replays are still being recounted. It was the golden era of Greyhound Basketball, those years in the mid 50’s and 60’s. The two have almost identical winning averages at 79% and 78%. They both won two back-to-back National Championships and went on to coach for many years after leaving Moberly.
Maury John went on to coach at Drake University until 1971 and to Iowa State until 1974 winning Missouri Valley Coach of the Year four times and the U.S. Basketball Writers Coach of the Year in 1969.
After a successful stop at Kansas State, Cotton went on to coach NBA basketball ending his career in 1996 with 832 NBA victories.
