MACC Greyhound Teams to participate
The Women’s and Men’s NJCAA Division I Basketball Tournaments, originally slated to begin March 16, have been postponed until April 20, 2020. Moberly Area Community College will be represented by both the women’s andl men’s squad for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The Women’s Team qualified by winning the Region 16 Championship by defeating Three Rivers CC and then won their District Title by defeating Iowa Western 64-51. The Men’s Team won the Region 16 title over Mineral Area 91-65 and then defeated Region IV winner Highland 78-70 to capture the Midwest District Finals. The Men’s Tournament will still be held in Hutchinson, Kansas and the women’s tournament will be at Lubbock, Texas.
“First of all, I really understand all the cancellations as we struggle with this epidemic in our country,” said Coach Pat Smith, “Obviously something we have to struggle with and understand. However, I was so disappointed for all the senior basketball players in the country at the NCAA and NAIA levels who all of a sudden find out there’s not March Madness. Therefore, I was so pleased when I found out the NJCAA was just postponing our tournament to the tentative date of April 20. Still gives our players the chances to compete in the National Tournament and I’m so excited for them with the seasons both teams have enjoyed. Obviously it presents some interesting dynamics in terms of having your team engaged and ready to play over the course of 5 weeks, but just glad Coach Haden and myself have this problem to deal with.”
The Lady Greyhounds currently have a record of 29-4 and will play Seward Co. in their first round match-up. The Hounds have a record of 27-6 and will have their first round opponent in Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa.
