Women’s and Men’s Squads had qualified
The NJCAA Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments were officially cancelled by the NJCAA along with all spring sport activities amid the medical concerns sweeping the country. Both tournaments were originally slated to have started on Monday, March 16 and then were postponed to a tentative date of April 20. The Lady Greyhounds had qualified by winning the Region 16 final by defeating Three Rivers and then won Iowa Western 64-51 to win the District Championship. The Men’s squad defeated then #5 nationally ranked Mineral Area 91-65 to win the Region 16 championship and won over Highland CC 78-70 to win the NJCAA Midwest District Championship.
“Obviously we understand this and all the other cancellations occurring across our country with the Corona Virus threat,” said Coach Pat Smith, “It makes perfect sense and our major concern is the health and welfare of our citizens. With that said I’m very disappointed for our student-athletes on both squads, along with all the other qualifying teams at every level, that there will be no national competition. However, I’m so proud of both our teams and the seasons they enjoyed, the excitement they provided our college and fan base. There’s something to be said that both teams won Regional and District Championships to end their seasons. Nevertheless, along with all the other teams, it’s tough to not be able to chase the next step and doing well in the Nationals. Now we must turn our attention to our student-athletes and insure that we provide the assistance to help them with their academic and athletic pursuits. I just really enjoyed coaching my team and will always relish their accomplishments and the type of young people they were. Our prayers and concerns are with our country and again, fully understand the decisions that have been made.”
The Lady Greyhounds finished season 29-4 record while the Men’s squad compiled a record of 27-6.
