#9 MACC improves to 23-3, clinches #1 regional seed
The Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team defeated Missouri State-West Plains 119-95 in NJCAA Region 16 action on Wednesday evening at the Firzsimmons-John Arena. Moberly jumped out to an 11-0 lead they would never relinquish on their way to a 58-39 halftime lead. The margin never got under 12 points the second half. Moberly was lead in scoring by Alonzo Verge, Jr. with 29 points and 9 assists, Billy Thomas scored 24 points (7 made three pointers), Sean Miller-Moore had 17 points and 13 rebounds while JaQualis Matlock added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Randy Miller, Jr. rounded out the double figure scoring with 10 points. Davis lead West Plains in scoring with 21 points, Brown had 19 points, Lovett added 16 and Torres contributed 15 points.
“I really like the way we came out with aggressive defense and offense,” said MACC Coach Patrick Smith, “Played with great pace and flow on the offensive end. As the game went, really struggled to stop them from scoring but they are really good on offense. We scored the ball and got enough stops but they are so good at playing fast, never really got a handle on stopping them the second half. With that said, really good win and we move on from here to the next practice and game. Very proud of our regular season Regional Top Seed but that’s not our ultimate goal.”
Moberly, which moved up to #9 in the NJCAA rankings this week, improved to 23-3 and 6-0 in Region 16 while winning their 8th straight game. West Plains dropped to 20-6 and 3-3 on the season. Moberly also clinched the #1 seed for the Region 16 Tournament to be held the first weekend. Moberly returns to action this Tuesday, February 13 as they travel to Penn Valley.
