The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team has announced five additions to their squad with the signing of NJCAA Letter-of-Intents for the 2021-22 season. The newest Greyhounds are transfers Dorian Staples(6’8”, 240 lb. forward from Fredericksburg, Va.) and Rashad Weekly-McDaniels(6’1’, 200 lb. Point Guard from St. Louis, Mo.). The incoming freshman are Jamaray Davenport(6’0”, 170 lb. wing from St. Louis), 6’5” wing James Dent from Springfield, Illinois and 6’9”, 250 lb. Post John Orogun-Lagos from Nigeria(HS in Buffalo, NY).

Dorian Staples played this past season at Allegany CC in Maryland where he averaged 11.4 points per game along with 8.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 49.6% from the field. He had a career high 29 points and 20 rebounds in contest vs. Potomac State. and posted 3 double doubles for a squad that finished 10-6. Staples played his HS basketball at Massaponax High School in Fredericksburg where he averaged 17 points and 9 rebounds his senior season.

Rashad Weekly-McDaniels played the 2020-21 season at NCAA Division I Central Michigan University. During his high school career he played at Trinity Catholic HS in St. Louis where his senior season he averaged 16.5 points per game, 4.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 38.8% from three point range. McDaniels was named to the All St. Louis Area First Team and posted a season high 36 points vs. Mehlville.

Both transfers will still maintain their freshman year of eligibility due to rules of this past season. Davenport is a tremendous three point shooter who played his high school basketball at Normandy High School. During his senior season he averaged 17.1 points per game while hitting 40.2% from three point range along with 86% from the free throw line. Davenport recorded a season high of 33 points vs. Rock Bridge and was named as the Suburban Conference Blue Pool Co-player of the Year.

Dent is an exceptional scorer who played his high school ball at the alma mater of former Greyhound great Eddie Smith, Southeast High School in Springfield, Illinois. During his senior season this past year, Dent averaged 21.5 points per game, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He was also named Chicago Sun 3A First Team All State.

Orogun-Lagos is originally from Nigeria but played his high school basketball at the Park School of Buffalo in the 2019-20 school year. His senior season he averaged a double-double with 14.4 points per game and 13.1 rebounds per contest. He received considerable NCAA Division I interest after High School before deciding to enroll at Sunrise Christian Academy(Kansas) where he played this past season.

“We did some very good things last season, but unfortunately fell short of our goal of regional and district championships,” said Patrick Smith, “therefore, in assessing your recruiting, you attempt to correct your deficiencies and what you feel you needed to get better at. I feel we really needed to improve our depth, multiple position players who can score in a variety of ways and give us defensive tenacity, along with adding physicality to our front line with size, bulk and low post scoring. I feel very good about these additions and how they will fit into our culture and program that we desire at MACC. We still have a ways to go but it’s a great start adding this five players to our roster and making our team better.”

The Greyhound newcomers will join returnees Sincere Parker(6’4” wing, 15.6 ppg and 5 rebounds), Tyren Moore(5’11” guard, 12.6 points per game), Jordan Persad(6’0” guard, 4 ppg and 3 assists) and Makalani Kafele(6’6” forward, 7 ppg and 5 rbs.).
