Alonzo Verge, Jr. newest Greyhound

The MACC Men’s Basketball Program signed 6’3” point guard Alonzo Verge, Jr. to an NJCAA National Letter of Intent.  Verge was named the Chicago Sun Times Player of the Year this past season as he averaged 26 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals per game for Thornton High School.  He was also named First Team All-City, and First Team All-State for his spectacular season.

In their team’s 81-70 Class 4 A Regional Title game over Bloom High School, Verge scored 43 points while grabbing 11 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists. “Alonzo is just a major recruit for us at this time or any time,” said Coach Patrick Smith. “He’s just a complete all-around player who not only can get points himself, but is also accomplished at setting others up as a point guard.  He’s so talented with the ball, and will fit so well into our system of fast break and ball attacking offense, along with our pressure defense.

He’s a young man who’s well known among the major recruiting circles and along with our returnees and other newcomers, just really look forward to coaching him and working with this team.” Smith did state that there is still a chance the Hounds might try to bring in one more player. “Obviously, we are very happy with returnees Tyree White, Dallas Morgan and Will Rucker. Likewise, we feel we have an excellent combination of transfers and incoming freshman that will keep our program at an elite level contending for championships.  You try to win two battles every year with each team; first, win recruiting battles to get the best players you can and second, then get ready to coach them to be the best they can be.  I credit Asst. Coach Andre Bell for our recruiting success, as he’s been very diligent and organized in his efforts; just done an excellent job of both identifying players and then putting the work in to get them.  Once again, just glad to have Alonzo as a Greyhound.”
