The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team ended the 2021 season as Region 16 Runner-Ups, ending their reign of back-to-back Regional and District Titles. Moberly defeated Missouri State- West Plains 96-90 in the semi-finals before being defeated by #2 nationally ranked Mineral Area 56-66 at Mineral Area on Saturday evening.

The Greyhounds were lead in scoring by Dezi Jones and Aaron Burt with 27 points apiece; Jones added 5 rebounds and 6 assists while Burt garnered 10 rebounds. Cortez Mosely rounded out the double figure scoring with 15 points and 7 rebounds. In the finals vs. Mineral Area for the second straight season, Moberly came back to tie the game at 29 all at halftime. Moberly lead 45-42 with 11 minutes remaining before Mineral went on a 14-2 run that Moberly was unable to answer. Mosely lead Moberly in scoring with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Jones added 13 points and Tyren Moore scored 12 points. Region 16 Player of the Year Malevy Lyons lead Mineral with 17 points(3-4 on treys) and Keonte Jones added 13 points. Mineral improved to 24-0 on the season and will now play Triton College for the Midwest District Championship.

“We are definitely disappointed that we did not win the Region Championship,” said Coach Patrick Smith, That was our goal all season long and hoped to beat Mineral Area one time to accomplish that. I thought we played very well on the defensive end and really executed our game plan; however, we weren’t good enough on the offensive side of the ball and that was indicative by not getting the quality of shots we wanted and live ball turnovers that resulted in points for Mineral. I take the blame for that and wish I could have done more to help our offensive execution because to put it bluntly, we didn’t score enough points to beat Mineral. You have to give them tremendous credit, they are truly a great defensive team and that’s what has carried them to the undefeated season they are having.”

“However, I am so proud of our team and the way they conducted themselves this season. This team has shown tremendous toughness and mindset in dealing with everything that has faced us this season and we were playing our best basketball of the season at the end as demonstrated by our 5 game win streak. We ended 16-6 in the games we played and unfortunately, just could not find a way to get past a tremendous Mineral Area squad. This loss will fuel us as a staff and players as we head into recruiting and next season. Thanks to our fans who supported us this season and very proud of my team for their performance this season.”

Moberly finished the season with a 16-8 record.
