Basketball to conduct second semester season

Following the recommendation from the NJCAA Presidential Advisory Council and the NJCAA Board of Regents, the NJCAA has announced its adjusted plan of action for the 2020-21 academic year. Following the Board of Regents vote on Monday, a majority of competition will be moved to the spring semester. The most recent plan of action shifts all close contact sports from the fall to spring semester such as football, men’s and women’s soccer and court volleyball. All winter sports competition will begin in January with a majority of championship seasons moved from March to April, including Women’s and Men’s Basketball. These changes are only for the 2020-21 school year as recommended by the Council.

The MACC Basketball Teams will be permitted 60 consecutive calendar days of practices and scrimmages from September 15 to December 15, 2020. They will be allowed five scrimmage dates total for the year with 2 of those allowable for the spring. Practice will be permitted to begin starting on January 11, 2021 and competition/games starting January 22. Each team will be allowed 22 games with the regular season ending on March 27. Regional play will begin the following week with the Midwest District Championship on April 10. The NJCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will begin April 19, 2021, still in Hutchinson, Kansas and Lubbock, Texas respectively.

“I’ve known for about a week these changes were going to occur,” said MACC Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach Patrick Smith, “I’m sure the thought process involves trying to get thru the first semester and have everything better by January, which of course we all hope. I’m excited that we are still looking at having a season and although this will be a season format that none of us have ever experienced, it’s up to us as coaches and players to make the adjustments. The first semester will involve what we have always emphasized anyway, the academic priority , and getting our teams through practices and being ready for competition second semester. We’ve now got to completely reschedule games, along with scrimmages, and that will be a task the next few days. However, it’s all about getting your team prepared and better throughout the season and peaking at tournament time. I am looking forward to getting our athletes on campus and beginning this new journey during the 2020-21 school year. I commend the NJCAA for being proactive and having a plan in place.”

Smith said both program’s schedules will be released once they are completed.
