The Moberly Area Community College Women’s Basketball team improved to 3-0 last night as they knocked off John Wood Community College 86-38 at Fitzsimmons-John Arena.
The Lady Greyhounds trailed 9-7 near the midway point of the first quarter, however a 16-0 run gave MACC a 23-9 lead after 10 minutes of play. The two teams played even throughout the majority of the second quarter as the Lady Greyhounds took a 42-25 lead at halftime.
“We relaxed a little bit in the second quarter,” said MACC head coach Chad Killinger. “But, you also have to give John Wood a lot of credit because they were able to get to the free throw line and knock down some shots.”
MACC stretched their advantage to 36 points at the end of the third quarter, outscoring John Wood 29-10 over the third period of play. The Lady Greyhounds grabbed 12 offensive rebounds during that stretch and were able to convert the majority of them into baskets.
“We did a great job on the offensive glass in the third quarter,” said Killinger. “We stress rebounding quite a bit and I was really pleased with our effort on the glass during that 10 minutes.”
Jocelyn Taylor led MACC with 18 points as four Lady Greyhounds reached double figures. Carnethia Brown scored 15 points, to go along with seven steals and four assists, while Angelica Wiggins had 14 points. Brianna Perry also reached double digits with 11 points. Lunden Henry and Alexis Henry led the MACC rebounding effort with eight and seven rebounds to their credit.
The Lady Greyhounds shot 46 percent from the field, including seven of 21 from the three point line, and held John Wood to just 31 percent shooting. MACC outrebounded John Wood 47-22 and forced 38 turnovers.
