MACC GREYHOUNDS WIN MIDWEST DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

Defeat Triton College 83-74 to qualify for Hutch.

The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team defeated Triton College 83-74 to win the Midwest District Championship at the Fitzsimmons-John Arena on Saturday evening.   The game involved the winner of NJCAA Region 16,  #22 nationally ranked Moberly, hosting the #10 ranked NJCAA Region 4 Winner Triton College from Chicago. Moberly jumped out to an early 10-2 lead only to see Triton go on a 15-0 run to grab a 17-10 lead.  Moberly regained the lead at 21-19 and would never relinquish the lead the remainder of the game, leading 38-37 at the half.  Moberly’s largest lead was 66-52 but Triton got within 72-70 before Moberly secured the contest with timely baskets, good FT shooting and defensive stops. Sincere Parker, 6’4” freshman wing, lead Moberly with 23 points, 6’4’ sophomore wing Michael Thomas added 20 points, 6’0” PG Tyren Moore scored 17 points and 8 assists while 6’8” post Dorian Staples contributed 12 points with 10 rebounds.   Triton College was lead by Kolbe Montgomery with 15 points(5 made threes), Kalakon scored 12 points along with McKeithen also scoring 12 points.

“Just a tremendous effort by our guys, so proud of the team they have become,” said Coach Patrick  Smith, “Three tough post-season games that we have demonstrated  an outstanding level of toughness, poise and togetherness to secure Regional and District Championships. It’s what you work for as a coach, to see your team develop into an “US” group where it’s about it the Team with egos put aside and one common goal.  Triton is a really good team so once again we have proven what quality of team we have become.   Tremendous atmosphere here tonight with out crowd and just really appreciate the support we receive.  Now it’s onto Hutch and the next step as we await the selection show to see where we are seeded and play first round.  The best part of this is getting to continue to coach this team. “

Moberly improves to 27-6 with their 11th consecutive victory and will now participate in the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas March 14-19.  Triton College drops to 28-5 with the loss and will now await the Selection Sunday to see if they receive an At-Large Bid.
