Alonzo Verge named First Team All American
The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team has been ranked #10 pre-season in the Street and Smith Basketball Publication. The Greyhounds are the highest rated team from Missouri and finished last season 26-5 and ranked #11 in the final NJCAA Poll.
Alonzo Verge has also been named First Team All American by Street and Smith on the five member squad. Verge was named 2nd Team All American last season after averaging over 20 points per game along with 7 assists and 4 rebounds. He also set the single game scoring record with 51 points in a victory over Highland CC.
“Pre-season rankings don’t mean a lot in the overall scheme of things,” said Coach Patrick Smith, “However, I do think it’s a sign of respect for a nice three year run where we’ve won 27,26 and 25 games along with 8 championships. However, two of those years we fell short at the end of the year and that still hurts. Therefore, we won’t get caught too much up in that pre season hoopla but instead focus our energy and effort on becoming the best basketball team we can become. We’ve had a good September other than some injuries and hope to get back to full strength as we head into October. I’m very pleased for Zo as he’s a young man who puts a lot of work in to achieve this pre season status. Zo, Sean Miller and Will Rucker have been working hard for us as leaders and I know it’s all about the team for them.”
The Greyhounds will start official practice October 1 and open the season November 2-3 in the Orschlen Properties Classic.
