The #15 national ranked Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team traveled to Park Hills, Missouri and were defeated by #4 nationally ranked Mineral Area College 80-72 in NJCAA Region 16 action Saturday evening. The loss ended Moberly’s 10 game winning streak and 26 consecutive victories in Region 16 regular season competition. Moberly fell behind early and trailed 39-31 at the half. However, they came out in the second half to tie the game at 39 all but went cold and trailed 73-58 with five minutes remaining. MACC got back within 76-72 with 21 seconds remaining but could not score the remainder of the game. Angelo Stuart lead Mineral Area in scoring with 27 points, Keyyuan Batchman scored 15 points, Malevy Leons added 13 and Kevin Stone contributed 11 points.
“I give Mineral Area a lot of credit, they are a really good team,” said Coach Pat Smith, “They really competed, seemed to feed off the energy of the large crowd and really shot the ball well. Likewise, we seemed on our heels the entire evening and had no consistency offensively which lead to scoring droughts they used to seize momentum. When you lose a game, don’t lose the lesson and while we’ve been on a nice streak, we have never yet reached the level of play we need too going down the stretch. We need to get back to work, learn from a loss to a really good team and strive for the goals in front of us.”
Moberly dropped to 0-5 with the loss, 7-1 in the MCCAC Conference and 5-1 in Region 16. Mineral Area improved to 23-1 with the victory and 4-1 in Region 16 with the two teams splitting the regular season series. Moberly returns to action this Wednesday when they travel to Ottumwa, Iowa and play #5 national ranked Indian Hills at 7 pm.
