The #21 ranked Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team was defeated at #5 nationally ranked Indian Hills 100-93 on Thursday evening in Ottumwa, Iowa. Moberly fell behind 55-41 at the half and then saw Indian Hills surge to take a 45-64 lead at the 15 minute mark of the second half. However, the Greyhounds spurted behind pressure defense and scoring to tie the game four different times, the last time at 84 all with 3:30 remaining. Chris Childs hit a huge three pointer to give Indian Hills a lead they would not relinquish and hit free throws down the stretch to seal their victory. Eddie Creal lead Moberly in scoring with 25 points and 10 rebounds, Quinton Drayton and Markelo Sullivan had 12 points each, Dusan Mahorcic had 11 points and Cortez Mosely added 10 points for Moberly. Kansas Signee Tyon Grant-Foster lead Indian Hills with 24 points, Childs added 23 points(4-10 from three point range), Chris Payton scored 16 points, Malique Jacobs contributed 15 points and Maurice Callou had 13 points.
“Indian Hills is really a talented, very good team, definitely one of the best 3-4 in the country in my opinion,” said Coach Patrick Smith, “Thought our defense wasn’t very good the first half but give our guys a lot of credit for how they came back the second half and gave ourselves a legitimate chance to win. However, they were able to make plays late in the game and we didn’t, just could not get the key stops and thought we quick shot and forced a couple of shots instead of trusting our ball movement. Tough couple of losses after winning 10 in a row, but it’s the only time in my career we’ve played two top five ranked teams on the road in two consecutive games. We can use these two close losses to spur our movement toward the end of the season to be the squad we need to be to finish the season and head into the post-season. We need to improve 10-15 points, which is a reachable goal by being a more consistent team, and all of our team goals are in front of us.”
Moberly drops to 20-6 with the loss and currently stands 7-1 in the MCCAC Conference and 5-1 in Region 16. Indian Hills improve to 23-2 with the victory to stay undefeated at their place. Moberly returns to action this Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Metropolitan CC with a 7:00 pm tip-off.
