Winning Streak to 8 game with Region Opener
The Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team defeated Three Rivers CC 113-87 in their Region 16 opener on Sunday afternoon at the Fitzsimmons-John Arena. Moberly jumped out to an early lead behind six early points by Will Rucker and eventually lead 59-35 at the half. They were never threatened the second half and posted their 8th straight victory in posting their first Region win(1-0). Alonzo Verge lead the Greyhounds with 37 points(4 of 9 from three point range) while fellow sophomore Sean Miller-Moore added 22 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists. Freshman guard Markelo Sullivan added 12 points and 9 rebounds while Rucker added 10 points. Three Rivers was lead in scoring by Tristan Jarrett, the nations leading scorer at 29 ppg, with 24 points while post Austin Parker added 20 points and 14 rebounds.
“A tremendous win, very much team oriented,” said Coach Pat Smith, “So great to see Will play as well as he did offensively because he does so much for us defensively. Zo and Sean are playing at an optimal level but we have other players really contributing in multiple ways. The game was sponsored by Chuck and Evelyn Jorgenson and although they weren’t able to attend because of the weather, we just really appreciate their support and sponsoring the game. Just appreciate the Jorgensons and their continual backing of our program. I was so disappointed our reunion had to be cancelled but really look forward to having it next year as those years (Daly, Spoonhour and Kariker) were very special in Greyhound history.”
Moberly improved their record to 15-5 on the season while Three Rivers fell to 8-10 and suffered their first Regional loss(2-1). Moberly returns to the hardwood in another Region 16 contest on Wednesday as they host State Fair CC in a doubleheader at 5 and 7 pm.
