15th win in 16 games secures conference championship
The Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team defeated State Fair CC 91-72 in Sedalia, Missouri on Saturday evening. Their 15th win in their last 16 games also secured the MCCAC Championship and Region 16 #1 seed in the upcoming Regional Tournament for the Greyhounds. Moberly jumped out to an early 18-8 lead only to see the Roadrunners come back and get within 34-32 at the half. After a back-and-forth first 8 minutes of the second half, Moberly went on a 8-0 spurt behind 5 points by Markelo Sullivan to gain a 66-58 lead they would never relinquish. Alonzo Verge continued his fine play with 45 points, 7 steals and 5 assists while fellow sophomore Sean Miller-Moore had 15 points and 16 rebounds. Tahj Small and Sullivan had 11 points each to round out the double figure scoring. Demario Franklin lead State Fair with 33 points.
“Tremendous tough road win against a State Fair Team that played well against us,” said Coach Pat Smith, “Very proud of what this team has done after some early season losses, tremendously improved in all areas. To win 15 out of 16 and win 2 championships Saturday evening is great, but what we want to accomplish lies ahead. We look forward to the challenges in finishing this season strong and getting ready for the Region 16 Tournament next week.”
Moberly improved to 22-6 on the season along with 9-0 in the MCCAC and 7-0 in Region 16.
