Strong defensive effort results in 6th straight win
The Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team gained their 6th consecutive victory with a 90-71 win over Southeastern Iowa CC on Saturday evening at the Fitzsimmons-John Arena. The Greyhounds avenged an earlier loss to the Blackhawks 88-92 on November 28. The Greyhounds rode the hot first half shooting of Tahj Small and scoring of Alonzo Verge to gain a 44-35 halftime lead. Moberly then gained an early 58-39 second half lead that would never get below 11 points the remainder of the game. Moberly was lead in scoring by Alonzo Verge with 37 points(14-16 from the free throw line) and Tahj Small with 30 points(5-10 from three point range). Southeastern Iowa was lead in scoring by AJ Cox with 19 points and Kevon Fuller added 12 points. Moberly improved to 13-5 with the victory while the #24 ranked SE Iowa drops to 13-3.
“Just a very good all around effort by our squad,” said Coach Pat Smith, “We’ve really improved our offensive execution and defensive performance recently and we need to continue to progress. Southeastern Iowa is a very good ballclub and to hold them to 71 points, I’m really pleased. I know Zo and Tahj scored a lot of points, but we had other players who really played well within their roles. Now it’s onto conference and regional play and as always, should be an exciting year of basketball in Region 16.”
Moberly starts MCCAC Conference Play Tuesday at home vs. St. Louis CC with a 7:00 pm tip off preceded by the women’s game at 5:00 pm.
