Improve to 4-0 behind Alonzo Verge’s school record 55 points
The Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team improved their record to 4-0 by defeating Kennedy King College 106-65 in Chicago on Friday evening. The winning effort was lead by Alonzo Verge, Jr. as he broke his own school record with a 55 point performance, including 35 points the second half. Moberly trailed early but gained a 43-29 advantage at the half. The Greyhounds came out and dominated early in the second half and eventually stretched the lead to 92-45 with 7 minutes remaining. Verge connected on 17-24 field goals, 5 of 7 from three point range along with 16 of 17 free throws. He broke his own school record of 51 points last season vs. Highland CC in the finals of the Highland Invitational Tournament. Sean Miller-Moore added 22 points (including 4 dunks) and Tahj Small scored 13 points for the Greyhounds. Kelvin Jones scored 8 points to lead Kennedy King who fell to 0-3 with the loss.
“Just a tremendous effort by our team,” said Coach Pat Smith, “Thought our defense was better and obviously Verge just put on a tremendous individual effort. However, I was so pleased to see how our players worked together to help Zo get the record and while it shows what an outstanding player he is, also points out the quality of teammates we have on this team. Huge week for us in terms of team and individual development as it’s the longest stretch of practice time we will have for awhile. We are a work in progress with some very tough games coming up, the schedule only gets tougher.”
Moberly returns to action this Friday, Nov. 16 in the State Fair Comm. College Laser Image Classic at 5:00 pm vs. Independence(Ks.) CC.
