Day: November 21, 2019

The Moberly Area Community College Lady Greyhounds split a pair of games at the Wabash Valley Classic on Nov. 15th-16th. On Friday, Nov 15th, the Lady Greyhounds defeated the Trailblazers of Vincennes University 76-71. MACC jumped out to 10 point lead in the first quarter and went into the half with a 35-23 advantage. Vincennes battled back in the third quarter with a rally of three point shooting and tied the game twice in the final stretches of the contest. A double-double performance by DeAnna Wilson propelled the Lady Greyhounds to victory. Wilson finished with 31 points and 16 rebounds. Sophomores Kaysie Newson and Shania Liburd chipped in 13 points and 11 points, respectively.

On Saturday, the Lady Greyhounds took on the host team, the #17 ranked Wabash Valley Warriors. MACC struggled to score, shooting only 23% from the field, 17% from three-point terriroty, and 50% from the free throw line. Only one Greyhound played reached double figures, Darryn Zeigler, with 10 points. Wabash Valley shot a scorching 50% from the field and 50% from three. Sophomore Keya Patton paced the Warriors with 26 points. The final deficit was 89-55.

“We knew going into this weekend we would be presented with two very tough challenges. I was proud of the fight our team showed in the Vincennes game. After jumping out to a great start, losing our lead, and then being able to regain our composure to finish the game, it was good to see from our group. On the other side of that, we did not show the same composure on Saturday against Wabash. We allowed our poor shooting to bleed over into every area of the game, and we will have to learn from that. From a mental perspective, I did not have our team ready to compete and I will have to do a better job going forward,” Coach Hana Haden said of her team’s performance.

The Lady Greyhounds will compete in the first of two Region XVI Classics this weekend, playing State Fair Community College on Friday at 7:00pm and Mineral Area College on Saturday at 3:00pm. Both contests will be held at State Fair Community College.

Game between two ranked teams sponsored by Valentine Insurance Agency

The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team will be back in action this Saturday, November 23 as they host Southeastern Iowa in a 7 pm tip off. The Blackhawks of Southeastern Iowa CC are currently 6-1 and ranked #16 in the latest NJCAA Poll while Moberly is 5-2 with a #24 National NJCAA Ranking.

“It’s always great to play a quality opponent like Southeastern Iowa,” said Coach Pat Smith, “At the same time, the challenge is always the same; get our team ready to play 40 minutes of Greyhound Basketball in terms of playing hard, smart and together. When we perfect our system in terms of effort and execution, simplify the game offensively and make good, simple plays then we will start getting where we want to be. Very appreciative to John Cochran and Valentine Insurance Agency for their sponsorship of this game and support of our program.”
