After winning their first 32 games of the 2017-2018 season the #4 ranked Moberly Area Community College women’s basketball team saw their season come to a close as they lost in the Sweet Sixteen round of the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Tournament to #8 ranked Northwest Florida State College by a score of 68-47.

The two teams battled hard through the first quarter of play and were tied at 11 heading into the second quarter when Northwest Florida State caught fire from the perimeter. A series of three point field goals, combined with cold shooting and too many turnovers allowed the Lady Raiders to outscore MACC 24-9 during the second period as they built a 35-20 halftime advantage.

“We let their best shooter get loose a few times and she made us pay for it,” said MACC head coach Chad Killinger. “They were a little bigger than us at every position and, for the first time all season, we didn’t respond extremely well when they made a big run to end the half. We have typically been able to limit those types of runs by either getting stops or scoring on our end of the floor, but that just didn’t happen tonight.”

Northwest Florida State continued their torrid shooting in the second half and outscored the Lady Greyhounds 33-27 over the final 20 minutes of the contest to advance to the Elite Eight with the 21 point victory.

“We just never really got into a rhythm,” said Killinger. “They are an extremely good team, especially defensively, and they disrupted our timing on a lot of things. But, I also believe that having already played a game worked to their favor. It is a completely different atmosphere when you are playing in the national tournament and it seemed like they played with a more calming presence than we did.”
