Angelica Wiggins scored a career high 29 points and just missed tying the school record for three point field goals made in a game as Moberly Area Community College advanced to the NJCAA Region 16 Championship game for the first time since 2008. The #4 ranked Lady Greyhounds defeated State Fair Community College 79-65 as they improved to 30-0 on the season, extending their school record for consecutive victories.

MACC trailed 5-4 early in the contest when Wiggins knocked down her first three point field goal, following an offensive rebound by Anisha George, and the Lady Greyhounds never trailed again. Wiggins connected on four three point field goals in the first quarter as MACC led 17-10 at the first break.

The two teams would trade scores until the midway point of the second quarter when Wiggins hit her fifth triple to give the Lady Greyhounds their first double digit lead of the game, sparking a 7-0 MACC run that allowed their advantage to grow to 14, 32-18, near the four minute mark.

The Lady Greyhounds would eventually take a 40-29 lead into halftime behind 21 first half points from Wiggins, who made all six of her three point attempts in the half, and eight points from Alexis Henry.

After MACC got on the board first to begin the third quarter State Fair put together an 8-0 run to pull to within five before Alexis Henry converted a basket off an assist from Wiggins with just under three minutes to play in the quarter. The Lady Roadrunners trimmed their deficit to three, but Alexis Henry answered again to give the Lady Greyhounds a 47-42 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

MACC quickly pushed their lead to nine, 51-42, at the start of the fourth quarter, however a three point field goal and back to back three point plays allowed State Fair to climb back to within three, 56-53, with 6:13 remaining in the game.

After a State Fair timeout, Wiggins nailed her seventh three pointer of the game which was followed by scores from Jocelyn Taylor, George, and Alexis Henry as the Lady Greyhounds used a 9-0 run to take a 65-53 lead at the 4:04 mark. MACC led by as many as 17 points late in the contest to secure the 14 point final margin of victory.

“We played extremely well in stretches,” said MACC head coach Chad Killinger. “But, we weren’t consistent on the defensive end of the floor and State Fair was able to take advantage of that in the third quarter and early on in the fourth. We didn’t rebound the ball very well in the first half, but we improved upon that in the second half and were able to get out in transition, whether it was off a rebound or by forcing a turnover and that allowed us to get some easy baskets.”

Wiggins finished the game seven of eight from long range and also registered eight assists. Alexis Henry joined Wiggins in scoring a career high as she recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

“This is the time of the year that people have to step up and make plays, make big shots,” said Killinger. “I couldn’t be more proud of Angelica and Alexis for their performances today. They shouldered a big part of the offensive load and did other things on both ends of the floor that enabled us to win. We also got some great production off the bench from Jocelyn and Lunden that was pivotal to our success.”

Lunden Henry just missed a double-double as she totaled 10 points and eight rebounds, while Taylor contributed 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Sentreal Gregory added six points. George was limited to two points, but came away with eight rebounds. Brianna Perry and Chrishey Wilkes rounded out the MACC scoring with two points and one point.

State Fair became only the second team all season to shoot better than 40 percent against the Lady Greyhounds as both teams shot 41 percent from the field. MACC held a 45-33 advantage on the glass and turned the ball over three less times than the Lady Roadrunners.
