When the first regular season Top 25 Poll was released by the NJCAA for Division I Women’s Basketball it was expected that the Lady Greyhounds from Moberly Area Community College would appear somewhere in the Top 25. However, not only did they appear in the first poll they jumped from not being ranked in the preseason poll all the way to the 11th spot.

“I’m really happy for our girls to receive this kind of recognition,” said MACC head coach Chad Killinger. “We have some quality wins against some good opponents and they have worked extremely hard, since last spring for our returners, to put themselves in a position to be considered in the rankings.”

The Lady Greyhounds have now been ranked in the Top 25 or receiving votes for the poll in four of Killinger’s seven season as the head coach at MACC and were last ranked as high as 11th on January 7th of 2009 under head coach Katie Vaughn. During the 2012-2013 season the Lady Greyhounds were ranked as high as 17th, while appearing in the Top 25 or receiving votes in eight of the 14 regular season polls. That season marked the first time in 46 months that the program had appeared in the Top 25. The following season MACC received votes in four of the 11 regular season polls, but were unable to crack the Top 25.

Last season, the Lady Greyhounds were ranked 25th heading into Christmas Break, with a 13-1 record, and had received votes in the previous two polls, however a 10-7 mark during the second half of the season prevented them from remaining in the rankings.

“While it is an honor for other people to notice and recognize your success it also puts a bigger target on your back,” said Killinger. “We are going to do everything we can to keep taking things one day at a time and one game at a time. We have some very tough opponents on our schedule for next semester and the region schedule is always difficult to navigate, but we’ll do our best and keep working on the things we need to do in order to improve.”

MACC will face Missouri Baptist J.V. in their final home game of the semester on Thursday and then travel to St. Louis on Sunday where they will face Southeastern Illinois College as part of the St. Louis C.C. Shootout.
