Two in-state guards became the latest signees for the Moberly Area Community College Women’s Basketball program as both Shauna Rinehart of St. James High School and TrEl’Shawn Smith of Southern Boone High School returned their national letters of intent.

“We were looking to add some in-state guards who could fill some specific roles and Shauna and TrEl fit what we were looking for,” said MACC head coach Chad Killinger. “Shauna can flat out shoot the ball, which should help open some things up on the interior for us, and TrEl can get to the basket to finish or create for her teammates, while also being a solid defender. Both of these young ladies come from programs that have had a lot of success over the past couple of seasons and seemed to fit in well with our returners during their visits.”

Rinehart, a 5-6 guard, finished her four year varsity career with 1.092 career points and 227 career three point field goals as St. James reached the quarterfinals of the Class 3 State Tournament the past two seasons. She was named all-district three times, all-conference, all-area honorable mention, and academic all-conference all four years of her high school career, which also included a trip to the Class 3 Final Four and a third place finish in the 2013 state tournament during her freshman campaign.

“Shauna will help us stretch defenses with her shooting range,” said Killinger. “But, she also sees the floor pretty well and is capable of getting to the basket in transition. We are looking forward to working with her once school starts and know that she is going to bring a winning mentality to our program, as well as some toughness.”

Smith, a 5-5 point guard, competed at the varsity level all four years at Southern Boone in softball, basketball, and track. She was a team captain this past season, while being named defensive player of the year, as the Lady Eagles finished fourth in the Class 3 State Basketball Tournament, posting a record of 29-3. During her junior season Southern Boone made it to the quarterfinals of the state tournament. She was also a member of the schools 4x400 relay team that recently finished third in the state track finals.

“TrEl has a great deal of potential,” said Killinger. “She is a good all-around athlete and now that she will be able to focus on one sport I believe she will continue to improve in all areas of the game. She is very passionate and we feel that she is someone who is going to be willing to come in and do the little things that help a team be successful.”
