The Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team claimed the NJCAA Region 16 Basketball Tournament Championship Saturday night at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. The Greyhounds defeated Missouri State-West Plains 98-82 to claim the title for the second time in 4 seasons. Moberly grabbed an early 8-0 lead behind a highlight lob dunk by Sean Miller-Moore but saw West Plains come back to gain a 34-27 lead as Moberly encountered foul trouble. However, Moberly was able to gain a 38-34 halftime lead they would never relinquish. MACC came out and seized control of the game with a 60-44 lead and would never be threatened the remainder of the game. Alonzo Verge lead Moberly in scoring with 26 points and 4 assists while Sean Miller-Moore had an outstanding game with 24 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists. Freshmen guards Tahj Small had 17 points(5 made treys) and DeMarcus Sharpe contributed 10 points and 5 rebounds.

West Plains was lead in scoring by Davon Clayborn with 20 points, Sardaar Calhoun had 18 and Eric Lovett scored 17 points.

“So pleased for all of our players and fans, but especially for our sophomores,” said Coach Pat Smith, “To fall short in the region last season and lose by one point to West Plains, we challenged them all season to stay focused on the task of completing the journey with a regional championship. This team is just a special group of young men who have bought into our culture of toughness and just truly enjoy playing with each other. To win 19 out of 20 games and go undefeated in a very good region points out what type of team they have become. Now it’s onto the next step and playing at the winner of Region IV for the right to get to Hutch in the District 4 Championship game, right where we want to be at this time of year.”

Missouri State-West Plains finishes the season at 20-12 for the season while Moberly improves to 26-6 by winning 19 of the last 20 games. They will now advance to the District IV Championship Game to be held at the site of the Region IV winner this upcoming Saturday, March 9(game time to be determined). Highland plays Triton tonight to determine the championship of Region 4.
