Will face Missouri State-West Plains in finals Saturday

The Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team overcame an early deficit to defeat Mineral Area College 104-78 in the NJCAA Region 16 semi-finals on Thursday in Jefferson City, Missouri. After coming from 7 points down in the first half, Moberly came back to gain a 44-44 tie at the half behind three made treys by freshman guard Markelo Sullivan. Moberly went on a 20-2 run early in the second half to blow the game open and cruise to the victory and advance to the regional finals. Alonzo Verge lead the Greyhounds with 34 points and 10 rebounds while fellow sophomore Sean Miller-Moore had 30 points and 10 rebounds. Sullivan contributed 14 points while freshman forward Tahj Small had 10 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists.

“Mineral Area came out playing so well,” said Coach Pat Smith, “WE weathered their early shooting and hung in there, kind of found our way as the half went on. Thought we did a great job controlling the tempo in the second half and stepped our defense up full court and half. However, our goal the entire year has to win the Region Tournament and we have that next game to get ready for. We will play a very good West Plains team who is so talented offensively and we must be ready to meet the challenges they will present. To be where we are at is what you work all year for.”

Moberly improved to 25-6 on the season with 4 consecutive seasons of 25 or more wins. Mineral Area ends their season at 23-9. Moberly will face Missouri State-West Plains, who defeated Three Rivers 81-76 in the other semis, on Saturday night at 8:00 pm at Lincoln University in Jefferson City.
