Greyhounds gain 23rd victory in home finale for 5 sophomores

2/19/2019
The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team defeated Metropolitan Comm. College 103-85 on Monday evening at the Fitzsimmons-John Arena. Metro jumped out to an early 27-19 lead but Moberly came back to gain a 58-47 halftime advantage. The Greyhounds eventually stretched the lead to over 30 points with five minutes remaining as they won their 16th out of the last 17 games. Tahj Small lead Moberly in scoring with 27 points and 16 rebounds along with shooting 10-14 from the field, 3-5 from behind the arc. Alonzo Verge scored 22 points and Sean Miller-Moore added 18 points while Will Rucker scored 12 points along with 11 points from Markelo Sullivan.

Alonzo Verge set the single season scoring record for the Greyhounds with 881 points breaking the record of Greyhound great Malcolm Thomas from the 1982-83 season. Verge will also have the single season record of point average as he’s currently averaging 30.7 ppg.

“Good win for us on a night that we weren’t probably at our best,” said Coach Pat Smith, “I give a lot of credit to Metro CC as they came out and really shot the ball well. However, we stayed the course and eventually started playing good basketball, especially improving our defense. Really good spurt for our club at the start of the second half. So happy and pleased for Zo and his achievements, knowing how hard he has worked and all he’s meant to our program. It’s a tremendous accomplishment and he will definetly be up there among the best to ever wear a Greyhound Uniform. However, want to applaud his teammates as they’ve done a great job this season of helping him achieve this milestone. We have a strong team of guys that enjoy playing together. Now it’s onto the ending the regular season Saturday at West Plains and getting ready for the regional tournament.”

It was the last home game for five Greyhound Sophomores; Verge, Sean Miller-Moore, Will Rucker, Rohkist Amadou and Tommy Phillips. The group currently has posted a 49-11 record in two years, won 6 championships (so far) and only lost two home games in the 2 seasons.

“So proud of this group, not only as players, but the type of individuals they are,” said Smith, “Obviously Zo has had a memorable career but Sean Miller-Moore has just been outstanding and consistently just gotten better. He’s playing at such a high level right now and his recruiting is blowing up. Just so proud of Will and the adversity he’s had to overcome to be where he’s at now. He’s just so valuable to us in terms of all the things he does on the defensive and rebounding areas. Ro and Tommy have just been great teammates, just tremendous individuals to have on the team and cannot express enough appreciation for all they do for our program. These five players will be missed but in the meantime we have a regional tournament to win. That’s the only thing this group has not done and I know they have a deep rooted desire to get a Regional Championship.”

Moberly finishes up the regular season Saturday night at Missouri State-West Plains at 7:00 pm. They will play their Semi Finals Region Contest on Thursday at 6 pm vs. the winner of the #4-#5 seed play-in game at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. The Greyhounds are currently 23-6 on the season, 9-0 in the MCCAC and Region 16 regular season champs at 7-0.
