5 Sophomores returning for 18-19

5/25/2018
The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team will be returning five returning players for the 2018-19 season. The returnees are 6’3” point guard Alonzo Verge, Jr.(Hillside, Illinois); 6’7” forward Will Rucker(Moberly, Mo.); 6’5” wing Sean Miller-Moore(Brampton, Ontario); 6’2” guard Rohkist Amadou(Moberly, Mo.) and 6’1’” guard Tommy Phillips(Fayette, Mo.). Verge is returning after a freshman season in which he was named 2nd Team All American, 1st Team All Region and 1st Team ALL MCCAC after averaging 20.8 points per game, shooting 55% from the field, 4.1 rebounds and over 6 assists per game. He also set the single game school scoring record of 51 points in the finals of the Highland Invitational Tournament. He is being actively recruited by West Virginia, Texas Tech, Central Florida, St. Louis and Florida State.

Rucker became a very key player for the Hounds as he earned a late season starting role and was a tremendous defensive and rebounding presence. His contributions continued to improve throughout the season after redshirting during the previous season following knee surgery. Miller-Moore had a tremendous freshman season as he was a starter throughout and posted averages of 10 points and 6.5rebounds per game. His athleticism lead to many spectacular dunks and he scored 26 points and 16 rebounds in a key road victory over State Fair.

“While we obviously are losing some very good basketball players and people,” said Coach Patrick Smith, it’s very good to basically have three starters back from a team that won 26 games. Zo had just some great moments for us as a freshman as evidenced by his accolades and when he improves his consistency, he can continue to get even better. Will’s improvement was constant last year and he really sacrificed for our team by giving us a physical presence; I want him to keep that toughness but start getting back his guard skills to become that well rounded player. Just feel he’s going to have a great sophomore season for us. Sean was a good player for us throughout the season and with improved shooting consistency, can become that really hard to guard offensive threat combined with his slashing ability. Tommy and Ro are just such hard workers, good people and great to have in the program, always lending to the betterment of our team.”

“I feel our recruiting has been very successful with 3 still left to sign,” said Smith, “However our success next season starts with our returnees with their ability to continue to improve and lend leadership from being here for a year. I look forward to coaching these players again and it’s great to have a very good returning nucleus.
